Our Unique Year 7 Homeroom Program - A Supportive Start to High School
Starting high school is a big transition, and our Year 7 Homeroom Program is designed to make it as smooth as possible. Each Year 7 class is assigned a homeroom teacher who teaches two or three subjects, with the specific subjects varying depending on the teacher's skill set. Students are placed into their homerooms by the Transition Team, in consultation with our partner primary schools. This structure helps students settle into high school by:
- Building strong connections – Having the same teacher for multiple subjects creates a familiar and supportive learning environment, and encourages stronger student-teacher relationships.
- Providing a smoother transition – Students receive extra guidance as they adjust to high school expectations.
- Encouraging friendships – Spending more time with the same classmates helps students build lasting friendships.
Our homeroom program ensures that every student is known, valued, and cared for as they begin their high school journey.
Motivated Learners
At Oak Flats High School, we encourage and support all students to aspire, achieve, and succeed. We aim to identify and cater to the needs of students who are committed to, and take responsibility for, their own learning to achieve their best educational outcomes. One way we do this is by offering students the opportunity to nominate themselves for the Motivated Learners Class.
Criteria
Motivated Learners are recognised as students who demonstrate the following attributes:
- Positive Attitude – Students show a strong desire to extend themselves and achieve the best possible outcomes.
- Good Behaviour – Students follow all rules, cooperate with others, and encourage the learning of their peers.
- Excellent Class Work – Students complete all set work, including homework and extension work, maximising their learning opportunities.
- Extra-Curricular Activities – Students participate in a variety of school-based extra-curricular activities that enhance their classroom learning.
Each semester, students in the Motivated Learners class will be reviewed based on these criteria. Students who do not meet the criteria will be withdrawn from the program.
Responsibility of Oak Flats High School
Oak Flats High School and its teachers will foster a positive learning environment by providing extension opportunities to enhance the learning of Motivated Learners. This includes participation in activities such as master classes, workshops, community projects, and competitions.
