Oak Flats High School runs a wide range of services aimed at supporting and nurturing our Aboriginal students. We strive to promote and develop close relationships with our local community.
The school's Aboriginal community engagement officer Lee-Anne Setter works closely with the Learning Support team to plan and set individualised goals for our Aboriginal students to succeed and achieve their learning outcomes.
Within Oak Flats High School and the local community, Lee-Anne runs and supports many programs:
Sista Speak, Bro Speak, Aime, Art programs, Richard Campbell’s Cultural program, Camps, Active Citizens program, Community contact, Into Uni programs, Dance workshops, NRL programs and Yarning time - whilst painting which promotes an opportunity for students to debrief and encourage open communication about various things such as building confidence, self respect and respect toward others.
Oak Flats High School also holds many celebrations and events such as NAIDOC Celebration and Reconciliation Week as well as end of year events which the community are invited to attend.
“My role is to offer our Aboriginal students emotional, education and cultural support. To connect with our students and help them find their place in the Aboriginal Community. At Oak Flats High School I encourage members of the Aboriginal community to visit our school. We invite Elders to come and see the students and give talks to help the students complete the topics they are studying and to support them.” Lee-Anne Setter.
Lee-Anne’s mission in her role is to break down any barriers between the community and school, to encourage an open and happy learning environment for all Aboriginal students to achieve.
