Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE)
Exploring History, Geography, and the Social Sciences
At our school, the Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) faculty fosters a deep understanding of the world - past, present, and future. Through the study of History, Geography, and a diverse range of social sciences, students develop critical thinking, research, and analytical skills that prepare them for active and informed citizenship.
Mandatory Learning (7–10)
History and Geography are core subjects from Year 7 to Year 10, where students:
- Explore key historical and geographical concepts, including cause and effect, continuity and change, sustainability, and interconnections.
- Investigate the ways societies, cultures, and environments evolve over time.
- Develop skills in research, analysis, and communication to form evidence-based perspectives on local and global issues.
Elective Opportunities (Years 7–10)
In addition to mandatory subjects, students in Stages 4 and 5 can engage in a variety of HSIE electives, allowing them to deepen their understanding of people, societies, and the world around them.
Senior Studies (Years 11–12)
For students in Stage 6, HSIE offers a broad selection of HSC courses, providing pathways into humanities, social sciences, law, commerce, international relations, and beyond. Our senior HSIE subjects include:
- Aboriginal Studies – Exploring the histories, cultures, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Ancient History – Investigating the people, places, and events that shaped the ancient world.
- Business Studies – Understanding how businesses operate and their impact on society.
- Economics – Analysing financial systems, economic decision-making, and global markets.
- Geography – Examining physical and human environments and the challenges they face.
- History Extension – Engaging in historiography and independent historical inquiry.
- Legal Studies – Exploring the legal system, rights, and justice in Australia and globally.
- Modern History – Investigating key events and movements that have shaped the modern world.
- Society and Culture – Analysing contemporary social issues and cultural diversity.
- Studies of Religion – Examining religious traditions and their impact on societies.
HSIE provides students with the skills to think critically, engage with real-world issues, and develop a lifelong appreciation for history, geography, and the social sciences. Whether exploring ancient civilisations, contemporary global challenges, or the dynamics of law and economics, our HSIE subjects empower students with knowledge that extends far beyond the classroom.
In human society and its environment (HSIE), both subjects of history and geography are mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
