Visible Learning

What is Visible Learning?

Visible Learning is the result of 15 years’ research and synthesises of over 800 meta-analyses (over 50,000 studies) relating to the influences on achievement in school-aged students. It presents the largest ever collection of evidence-based research into what actually works in schools to improve learning (and what doesn’t).

The big idea is ‘know thy impact.’ John Hattie argues in his books that expert teachers are not wedded to specific ideas but instead focus regularly on evaluating the effects they have on their students and adjust teaching methods accordingly. Visible learning involves teachers seeing learning through the eyes of students; and students seeing teaching as the key to their ongoing learning. When learning is visible the student knows what to do and how to do it and the teacher knows if learning is occurring or not. Teaching and learning is visible when the learning goal is not only challenging but is explicit.

What is does it look like at Oak Flats High School?

The Visible Learning Team is currently completing research and data collection while working with Corwin Australia who offer a host of professional learning services to support school based, system wide, regional and state wide improvement priorities. Over the coming years Oak Flats High School will implement a range of Visible Learning strategies to improve the teaching and education for all of our learners.

The areas we are focusing on include:

  • The Visible Learner
  • Know Thy Impact
  • Inspired and Passionate Teachers
  • Effective Feedback
  • The Visible Learning School

These improvements will incorporate the whole school learning community including learners, teachers, parents/carers and the community as a collective.

We look forward to working with you on these exciting changes to the way we do learning at Oak Flats High School.
