Our extra-curricular highlights
Debating and public speaking
English teacher Miss O’Flynn mentors our school debating team, guiding students as they develop confidence, critical thinking, communication and teamwork skills. Through debating and public speaking, students learn to express their ideas clearly and persuasively, while also listening and responding respectfully to others. They have the opportunity to represent our school at local and state competitions, building skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom. Students meet once a week at break time.
Creative and performing arts
Our music and art programs give students opportunities to be creative, express themselves, and build confidence. At break times, students can audition to join the vocal group with Mrs Jenkins, join a guitar workshop with Mr G, or take part in Coastline Creatives art club with Ms Crighton. Throughout the year, there are plenty of chances to perform and exhibit, from our annual Cabaret Show to CAPAfest and the HSC Showcase, where students proudly share their talents with the school community.
Homework Club
The Oak Flats High School Homework Club runs every Wednesday from 2:40 pm to 3:30 pm in the Information Centre, starting Week 3 and continuing until the second-last week of each term. Open to all students, it provides a supportive space to strengthen academic skills, complete assignments, and prepare for exams. A team of dedicated teachers from across subject areas is on hand to offer guidance, while students also have the chance to connect with peers, develop study skills, and reinforce their learning in a friendly environment.
Science Club
Run once a week during break by Mr Duci, our Science Club is the perfect place for curious minds to explore, experiment, and discover. From hands-on activities and fun challenges to deeper investigations, students get the chance to extend their knowledge and enjoy science beyond the classroom. It’s a welcoming space to ask questions, share ideas, and be inspired by the wonders of the world around us.
Chess Club
Oak Flats High School Chess Club welcomes players of all levels, from beginners learning the basics to experienced students honing their strategies. Meeting regularly at break times in the Information Centre, it’s a place where students can challenge themselves, practise critical thinking, and enjoy a friendly game with peers. Members also represent Oak Flats High School in regional competitions, where they have performed with great success. Chess helps build patience, problem-solving and concentration — all while having fun in a supportive environment.
Welcoming Visiting International Students
Oak Flats High School proudly hosts groups of visiting international students for one- or two-week programs, as well as individual exchange students from around the world. This cultural exchange enriches our school community, helping our students develop global awareness, communication skills, and cross-cultural friendships. Our students treasure these connections, with some forming pen-pal friendships.
Hosting international students gives our students a first-hand experience of other cultures, encourages empathy and understanding, and builds memories and friendships that last a lifetime.
Senior Fitness Club
Senior Fitness Club gives Stage 6 students the chance to make the most of our brand new school gym through 40-minute sessions every Thursday during Break 2. Led by Mr Grieve and the PDHPE faculty, the program offers a mix of strength, endurance, HIIT and circuit training. More than just fitness, the club helps students build teamwork, confidence and resilience, while creating positive memories of their Senior years and developing life skills that extend well beyond school.
Trips and excursions
Our students enjoy getting out of the classroom to explore, learn and try new things. These experiences help them grow, build confidence and see how their learning connects to the world. From travelling by train to Sydney to see art exhibitions such as the Archibald Prize, to Biology fieldwork at the Minnamurra River, and TAS excursions to the Sydney Botanical Gardens and Chinatown to explore food traditions, our students value the chance to learn in real-world settings that enrich their studies.
Team Sports Competitions and Gala Days
Oak Flats High School offers students the opportunity to compete in a variety of team sports, including basketball, netball, soccer, and rugby league, through inter-school competitions and gala days. The PDHPE faculty organise teams and coordinate participation in these events, which are run by regional sporting associations. These events foster a sense of community and pride as students represent Oak Flats High School in friendly yet competitive environments, while developing teamwork, sportsmanship, and school spirit.
Pygmy Goat Club
Led by Mr Tolley, our Pygmy Goat Club is a favourite for students who love hands-on learning and animal care. Meeting regularly at the school farm during breaks, students help look after our friendly pygmy goats, learning about feeding, grooming, and responsibility in a fun and supportive environment. The club is not only a chance to connect with animals, but also with friends, while building teamwork and a sense of pride in caring for our school farm.
Student Leadership at Oak Flats High School
At Oak Flats High School, we believe every student has the potential to lead. Our Student Representative Council (SRC) is at the heart of student leadership, giving young people the chance to represent their peers, lead initiatives, and build skills in communication, organisation, and teamwork.
The SRC is elected each year by both students and staff, continuing the strong tradition of leadership at Oak Flats High. Members receive dedicated leadership training and take part in various planning and training events, providing opportunities to enhance their skills and actively shape school culture. SRC students have their own roll-call class, led by their SRC mentor, Miss Wills, and meet with the Principal and present to the School Executive twice each term, taking part in year meetings and decision-making processes that reflect the student voice.
SRC members play a visible role in school and community life — organising events, fundraising, leading assemblies, coordinating school motivational activities, and representing the school at out-of-school events such as ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies. These experiences help students grow in confidence, develop responsibility, and contribute positively to our school community.
Student leadership at Oak Flats High School is about more than titles — it’s about initiative, service, and working together to make our school the best it can be.
